TNO The Netherlands is undergoing an immense energy transition from gas and oil to renewables such as wind, solar, hydrogen, electricity and geothermal energy. Solar and wind power is not enough to meet the demand for energy, so geothermal power will be a key element in the energy transition. Rijswijk is one of the best places in the Netherlands to harness geothermal energy. At The Park is a unique location full of geothermal potential: the porous sandstone, the Rijswijk stone and the Rijswijk formation combine to create the perfect conditions for a ‘geothermic doublet’. By 2050, we expect to generate around a quarter of the country’s energy needs (200 petajoules) by harnessing the power of our Earth. One of At the Park’s current tenants is TNO, which runs the Rijswijk Centre for Sustainable Geo-energy (RCSG) here. The RCSG is a world-class facility at which all kinds of organisations conduct theoretical and practical research into geothermal energy and the energy transition. 15 TNO employees currently work At The Park and TNO soon expects to expand the volume of work it conducts here.
