TNO The Netherlands is undergoing an immense energy transition from gas and oil to renewables such as wind, solar, hydrogen, electricity and geothermal energy. Solar and wind power is not enough to meet the demand for energy, so geothermal power will be a key element in the energy transition. Rijswijk is one of the best places in the Netherlands to harness geothermal energy. At The Park is a unique location full of geothermal potential: the porous sandstone, the Rijswijk stone and the Rijswijk formation combine to create the perfect conditions for a ‘geothermic doublet’. By 2050, we expect to generate around a quarter of the country’s energy needs (200 petajoules) by harnessing the power of our Earth.
